Beginning Study
What do I need to do as a new ACU student?
Firstly, find out about ACU and prepare for study.
Orientation
O Week is the time to:
- Find out your semester timetable. See Timetables.
- Check that your enrolment details are correct.
- Organise your student card and passwords.
- Check your ACU student email.
- Find these places on campus: the Library, classrooms, Student Centre, Bookshop, Student Association, Cafeteria and Office of Student Success (student support).
- Take part in Orientation activities to learn more about your course and meet staff and students.
- Find out when tutorials begin and your tutorial groups.
- Find the location of the offices for academic staff.
- Attend free workshops on technology, the library and learning at ACU (managing time, writing and referencing).
- Organise a place to study at home. Talk to family and friends about your study commitments for the semester.
Study Requirements
In Week 1, the Lecturers-in-Charge of your units will explain the Unit Outlines that you can download from LEO.
The Unit Outline includes:
- topics for each week's lecture
- details of the textbook or recommended readings
- assessment tasks and due dates
- marking guides for assessment tasks.
Use the Unit Outlines to work out a timeline (semester planner) for completing assesment tasks and a weekly and daily study routine.
How do I contact my lecturers?
Contact details are listed in the Unit Outlines.
Contacting Staff
Out of class, lecturers have consultation hours to see students studying their units. Also the Staff Directory and School Offices list staff details.
Casual academic staff work less hours on campus. Ask after a lecture if you are having any difficulty in contacting staff.
